William Ira Wood began his career as a pilot of a barge that traveled through major cities such as Louisville, St. Louis and Cincinnati.  Wood was an entrepreneur; he discovered that the bigger cities he was frequently visiting on his barge route had many products that were not available in the smaller towns.  Wood began to take orders for various items all along his route.  This practice became very common for Wood.

In 1918, Wood decided to discontinue piloting and began selling the main items that were requested from his customers while piloting.  This resulted in the opening of his plumbing supply store, which he named after himself, Ira Wood.  The first Ira Wood store location was in Owensboro, KY on the intersection of 4th Street and Cedar Street.  While at this location, Wood grew his company to over 100 employees.  Wood’s business was responsible for the sale and installation of a large portion of residential and business plumbing needs. 

In the early 1940’s, Ira Wood was relocated to 217 E 2nd Street and overlooked the Ohio River. 

In the early 1990’s, the 2nd Street location was demolished and Ira Wood was again relocated due to the city of Owensboro building the River Park Center.  Ira Wood relocated to 620 Salem Drive.

In 2003, Ira Wood expanded onto the Internet.  Upon this expansion, Ira Wood diversified its products and began to sell products for all areas including fine home, outdoor, and personal items.

In 2005, Ira Wood expanded in the Owensboro, KY area opening its second location.  This location resides at 3021 Harbor Road. 

Currently, Ira Wood’s corporate office and warehouse is located at 3021 Harbor Road and 620 Salem Drive is devoted as a showroom.

Throughout the years, Ira Wood has seen many changes and has grown into one of the nation's premier independent home improvement wholesaler and fine outdoor, gourmet, and health retailer.  We currently provide approximately 350+ authorized brands, most of which are in stock, at every-day low prices.  All of our products are brand new and include the full factory warranty.
